Victims of paralysis go surfing with community’s help

Saturday, May 18th, 2013

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Victims of paralysis proved this weekend that nothing can stop them from hitting the waves at Wrightsville Beach.

Community surfers came together with the support of “Life Rolls On,” a non-profit organization, to host the event “They Will Surf Again” where teams of surfers take participants out into the water.

“You are putting your life in someone else’s hand 100%,” said Ocean Cure President and surfer Kevin Murphy. “If you do not have control over your arms, or you are a quadriplegic and you do not have any control, it is all up to the person who is behind you paddling you in. The confidence in faith they have in us is tremendous.”

Participants ages 7 to 74 traveled from as far away as Florida to surf in the event. Over one hundred volunteers supported them all the way.

Volunteers say beaches are not very handicap accessible, so it is nice to help everyone enjoy the beach. Parents say the event is uplifting and gives people suffering from paralysis confidence to reach out and do other things.
