StarNews: Former commissioner Berger wanted $60,000 to resign

Thursday, May 30th, 2013

On the day of the scheduled meeting, Berger had to go out of town unexpectedly, he said, for reasons "tied to getting to the root of my complicated neuropsychological matter."

Berger was removed from the board four days later following an amotion hearing. The board voted 3-2 to remove him, with Berger and Commissioner Jonathan Barfield dissenting. It was the first time an amotion had been successfully used to remove a North Carolina elected official in nearly a century.

Berger has until late June – 30 days from his removal – to appeal the decision, which he says he intends to do. As of Wednesday afternoon, no appeal had been filed.

NC Democrats hire new executive director

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A former administrator at the Vermont Democratic Party is the new executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party.

Robert Dempsey has been hired to run the North Carolina party’s day-to-day operations. The state party’s executive committee voted Tuesday night to approve his hiring.

A search committee led by party Chairman Randy Voller chose Dempsey after receiving more than 50 applications for the post. Dempsey also has worked for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and recently managed the winning campaign of a congressman now in California.

Voller said Dempsey knows how to win elections and communicate with voters. The state Democratic Party has struggled the past two election cycles, losing its majority in the General Assembly and the governor’s mansion since 2010.

Voller was elected chairman in February.
