Marines: Human error to blame for deadly accident

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

CAMP LEJEUNE, NC (AP) — A military investigation has determined human error was to blame for a March mortar explosion that killed seven US Marines in Nevada.

1st Lt. Oliver David, a spokesman at Camp Lejeune, said in a press release Wednesday that a Marine operating a 60 mm mortar tube and ammunition “did not follow correct procedures, resulting in the detonation of a high explosive round at the mortar position.”

The Marines did not release a copy of the investigative report and declined to provide any further details about the nature of the deadly mistake. Officials also would not say whether changes to training procedures were enacted as a result of the review.

Marine officials announced earlier this month that two officers and a non-commissioned officer were removed from command following the March 18 accident at Hawthorne Army Depot. Seven Marines and a sailor were also wounded.

FIRST ON 3: TSA finds loaded gun at ILM checkpoint

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the fifth time this year, security screeners found a loaded weapon at a checkpoint at Wilmington International Airport yesterday.

The Transportation Security Administration says it was one of two loaded firearms four at North Carolina airports yesterday.

TSA says at 2:45 p.m., screeners at ILM found a loaded .40-caliber pistol in a carry-on bag at Wilmington International Airport. That morning workers found a loaded .380-caliber pistol in a carry-on bag at Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

TSA says airport police were alerted in each instance and both passengers were cited.

Weapons are not permitted in carry-on baggage. Last year TSA assessed more than $1.8 million in civil penalties for firearms discovered in passenger carry-on bags.

Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are properly packaged and declared.

There were 1,549 firearms discovered at TSA checkpoints nationwide in 2012. There have been five guns discovered during 2013 at Wilmington International and seven so far this year at RDU.
