Teens reported missing face charges after police chase

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Two teens reported missing now face charges after a chase with Leland Police over the weekend.

The Leland Police Department says officers responded Saturday to a tip that the two juveniles were spotted in the Walmart on US 17. Officers saw the teens in a vehicle, which police later discovered was stolen, and tried to stop it. Investigators say the driver refused to stop. After a brief pursuit that lasted less than three miles, police say the car hit another vehicle at the intersection of Blackwell Road and River Road.

At the time of the pursuit, LPD says officers did not know if the juveniles were being held against their will or they were simply runaways.

The two teens were transported to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center. The people in the other vehicle were not hurt.

Leland Police say they do not know the status of the juveniles’ injuries, but charges are pending. Investigators say they cannot release the names of the teens because of their age.

UNCW chancellor to announce sports decision Thursday

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW Chancellor Gary Miller plans to announce tomorrow his decision about whether to cut sports programs from the school’s athletic department.

Miller will hold a news conference at 8 a.m. to announce his decision about the report that recommended eliminating five programs from UNCW’s athletics department, according to a university spokeswoman. A committee Miller commissioned earlier this year to examine the athletic department recommended the school cut men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s cross country, men’s indoor track and softball

Miller’s announcement will come just before the UNCW Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet for a special meeting at 9 a.m. in the Warwick Center Ballroom on campus. The Board of Trustees was scheduled to discuss the committee’s reports.

WWAY has also learned Miller has reportedly been meeting this week with student-athletes for their feedback on the recommendations.
