Memorial for hit and run victim removed

Sunday, June 30th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After 27-year-old cyclist Zachary Paul Tyler was killed in a hit and run accident near the 7000 block of Wrightsville Avenue earlier this June, a memorial stood in his honor. Now, the spot where Zachary died is bare.

“Zachary had only died right here less than a week, and the NCDOT came and removed it,” said mother Beverly Tyler.

Zachary’s mother Beverly Tyler says a bike painted white was added to the memorial, and also quickly removed by NCDOT. She says the bike was more than a memory, but a reminder to drivers to slow down. She is not sure why her son’s memorial has been removed so quickly.

“There are areas in town where memorials have been there for months, if not years,” said Tyler.

Like the memorial near Dawson Street and South 5th Avenue in Wilmington…a memorial that has been left untouched for several months.

“It was a gift, as Zach was a gift. He was a soft-spoken, big guy, 6’4″ with a big smile. Just a kind person.”

Beverly Tyler put up another piece in memory of her son this weekend. She still hopes the bike is returned to the memorial soon and left alone.

NCDOT has not yet returned our phone calls.
