CHARGED: Officer finds cocaine during traffic stop

NC jobless rate falls to 8.8 percent in May

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s unemployment rate dropped to 8.8 percent in May, marking the fourth straight month of improvement in the measure of economic health for workers.

The state Commerce Department said Friday that the May’s jobless rate fell a fraction from April’s revised rate of 8.9 percent. The national rate rose from 7.5 percent in April to 7.6 percent in May.

The number of people employed in North Carolina has increased by more than 37,000 in the past year, but there are still more than 416,000 people listed as unemployed.

Since May 2012 the state has added about 56,000 nonfarm jobs, with all but 1,500 of those positions added by private employers. The biggest increase among major industries was in leisure and hospitality services, which added about 25,000 jobs.

Man faces drug charges after traffic stop

A traffic stop Thursday night ended in the arrest of a 25-year-old Wilmington man and the seizure of nearly 4 grams of crack.

WPD: Victim, witnesses silent about shooting

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police say the victim and several witnesses are not talking about a shooting last night in Wilmington.

WPD officers responded to the area of 12th and Grace streets around 7 p.m. They found a 20-year-old man who had been shot in the left leg.

Officers found two .40 caliber shell casings in the road.

Police say the victim did not provide officers with any information about who shot him or why. WPD says despite numerous people standing around the immediate area, no one provided any additional information to investigators.

The victim was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment.

McCrory appoints New Hanover Co. men to state boards

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two New Hanover County men are among Gov. Pat McCrory’s latest list of appointments to state boards.

The governor’s office announced today he appointed Cory Gore to the NC Appraisal Board and John Monteith to the NC Board of Architecture.

Gore is president of Gore Properties and Appraisal Group LLC. He is also the vice president of the North Carolina Professional Appraisal Coalition.

The NC Appraisal Board licenses, certifies and regulates real estate appraisers, including processing license applications and processing applications from schools and other organizations wishing to offer prelicensing/certification and continuing education courses. Each term is three years.

Monteith is president of Monteith Construction Corp. The company specializes in healthcare, education and institutional building. Monteith serves on the board of directors for New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation. He has been appointed to a seat designated for a public member.

The NC Board of Architecture ensures that only persons with a minimum level of competence are permitted to practice architecture and that practicing architects act according to professional standards. Each term is five years.
