FIRST ON 3: Leland Police officer also under investigation for checkpoint shooting

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A Leland Police officer is also part of the investigation into a shooting at a DWI checkpoint Friday night.

The town put Ofc. Anthony Bernard on administrative leave with pay Monday.

Seven deputies from Brunswick and New Hanover counties are also part of the SBI probe.

Town manager David Hollis says he did not send out a news release about Bernard because the Sheriff’s Office already had. He says he’s not sure why Bernard’s name has not been mentioned until now.

Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram says the officers opened fire at a car that tried to drive away from the checkpoint on US 74/76 in Leland.

Two men in the car were injured. They face several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon.

Report: Alleged Pender HS rape happened in school auditorium

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) — Investigators and school leaders are not saying much about a rape that allegedly happened on a high school campus in Pender County. But tonight we are learning more.

Sam Clark Sanchez, 19, is charged with the statutory rape of a 15-year-old girl at Pender High School. Deputies say it happened on the last day of school.

According to the incident report, the crime happened in the school’s auditorium the morning of June 7. Sanchez, a senior at the school, was arrested later that day. He got out of jail under $75,000 bond five days later.

We wanted to talk to school administrators about this alleged incident, but they refused to go on camera with us. They did however issue this statement. It reads in part:

“It is the district’s highest priority to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. We are deeply concerned about the serious nature of this matter and we are cooperating with the Sheriff’s Department’s investigation in a manner consistent with the school district’s policies, procedures, and the law.”

Sheriff’s investigators also won’t say much. Det. John Leatherwood, who is handling the case, says there may be a news release about what happened Friday. Leatherwood says the investigation continues. He says the case will eventually go before a grand jury.

We tried to reach Sanchez, but we could not find a phone listing for him.
