NC first lady urges Senate action on breeder bill

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina first lady Ann McCrory is making a rare foray into politics by urging the state Senate to take action on a bill aimed at preventing animal cruelty by large dog breeders.

McCrory said Tuesday that the Senate should follow the House’s lead in setting minimum care standards for people who keep at least 10 female dogs primarily to breed and sell offspring as pets.

The bill excluded hunting and show breeders to help assuage concerns in the agriculture industry. Some lawmakers fear the bill is another step in regulating hunting and farm animals or extending rights to animals.

Sen. Andrew Brock of Mocksville says those concerns and the limited time remaining in this year’s regular session cast doubt upon the bill’s prospects in his Senate committee.

Pender High student charged with rape on campus

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Deputies in Pender County have charged a 19-year-old with raping a fellow student at Pender High School on the last day of school earlier this month, WWAY has learned.

A school district spokeswoman said “an alleged incident” happened at the school, but she would confirm if it was a rape allegation.

Pender County Sheriff’s detective Sgt. John Leatherwood told WWAY this afternoon he was not prepared to release information about the investigation. Hours later, though, Leatherwood told our partners at the StarNews that Sam Clark Sanchez, 19, of Ivanhoe is charged with one count of statutory rape.

The newspaper reports deputies arrested Sanchez June 7, the same day the alleged rape occurred. He was jailed in Pender County in lieu of $75,000 bond.

Sgt. Leatherwood told the StarNews that investigators believe the rape happened during school hours and on school grounds, where both the suspect and alleged victim attended classes.
