Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry takes part in security drill

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — You may notice something out of the ordinary today on the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry.

The NC Department of Transportation Ferry Division says it is taking part in security exercise drills today involving the ferry terminals and vessels on the route.

The DOT says exercise is not taking place in response to any threat to the ferry vessels, terminals or any other transportation venue or facility. Instead it is as an exercise to assist in evaluating and enhancing security measures for the North Carolina Ferry System. Similar drills have taken place within the Ferry Division over the last several years.

The Ferry Division and its staff are working on the exercise with the Transportation Security Administration’s Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response team, law enforcement and emergency service agencies from Brunswick and New Hanover counties, and the United States Coast Guard Sector North Carolina. This is an exercise in which local and federal agencies work together to supplement existing security resources.

DNC reports missing equipment from Charlotte

Wednesday, June 19th, 2013

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — The Democratic National Committee says it’s missing nearly $500,000 in equipment used at the party’s convention in Charlotte last year.

The Charlotte Observer reported the committee has sent Charlotte-Mecklenburg police a list of the missing equipment, mostly computers, telephones and other communications equipment.

Washington attorney Joseph Sandler says it’s not unusual for equipment to be missing after the conventions. But Sandler says he thinks that Charlotte losses were higher than usual because planners prepared for events both at Time Warner Cable Arena and Bank of America Stadium.

He says some of the equipment may have been kept by committee staffers. But Sandler says he thinks some of the equipment was stolen.

Sandler says he does not think Charlotte police will be able to find much of the missing equipment.
