Racoon in New Hanover Co. tests positive for rabies

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A raccoon from New Hanover County has tested positive for rabies. It’s the fifth confirmed case of rabies in the county this year.

Friday Animal Services was called to Greenville Ave. to pick up a raccoon that had fought with a family pet. The owner handled the dog after the fight, which resulted in potential exposure. The raccoon was brought to the shelter, where it was euthanized and sent to the state lab for testing. The pet was current with its rabies vaccine.

Yesterday the State Lab notified ASU that the raccoon had tested positive for rabies. The victim was notified of the positive results. ASU will confirm that the dog received a rabies booster, and ASU will canvass the area to educate the public about the importance of keeping their pet’s rabies vaccine current.

Britt’s Donuts helps Carolina Beach Boardwalk to national food ranking

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Britt’s Donuts has been a staple at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk since 1939.

USA Today recently named Carolina Beach the eighth best boardwalk in the country when it comes to food, and Britt’s was the reason why.

The newspaper’s writers say the biggest challenge to eating britt’s donuts is trying not to eat a full dozen in one sitting.

“The first day of work I went outside to take a break and some guy pulled in and asked me if we were making donuts, and I said, ‘yes, sir.’ He said, ‘great. I just came down from minnesota just for britt’s donuts,'” Britt’s employee Will Janning said. “It’s kind of wild to hear that people drive down here just for the donuts.”

Among the boardwalks ranked ahead of Carolina Beach were Coney Island and Atlantic City.
