NC Senate panel backs welfare background checks

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A bill requiring North Carolina state workers to check the criminal history of welfare and food stamp recipients has passed a Senate panel.

A Senate judiciary committee unanimously endorsed the bill Tuesday, sending it on to another panel. The bill requires social services employees to see whether applicants or returning beneficiaries are fleeing from the law or violating parole.

A previous version required employees to immediately report red flags to local law enforcement, but the latest iteration requires social services to adopt rules for sharing that information first. The change arose out of concerns about complying with federal law.

Legislative staffers say the federal government already requires states to deny benefits to people with violations that are targeted by the bill. Critics have said the bill unfairly profiles welfare recipients.

Bridge work to cause detour in Southport starting Sunday night

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — Weather permitting, the NC Department of Transportation plans to close a section of NC 211 in Southport Sunday for preservation work on the bridge over the Duke Energy Progress Discharge Canal near the Brunswick Nuclear Plant.

Crews will close NC 211 between NC 87 and Dosher Cutoff SE each night from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. If the weather cooperates, the work is expected to be done by the morning of Monday, July 1.

During the closures, motorists should use the following signed detour route:

NC 133 (Dosher Cutoff SE) to NC 87 (River Road) back to NC 211 (N. Howe Street).

The DOT says during preservation, a new sealant, called an epoxy overlay, will be applied to the bridge deck. The epoxy overlay process involves a thorough cleaning of the bridge deck. A liquid epoxy is then applied to the bridge deck to seal any cracks. Finally, stone is placed across the bridge deck to ensure excellent traction for vehicles. These enhancements will improve the ride quality for motorists, as well as help the 41-year-old bridge last longer by sealing and protecting the pavement from water damage.
