UPDATE: Train carrying flammable cargo derails in Wilmington

Friday, June 28th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A train carrying flammable cargo is derailed in Wilmington’s Love Grove community, blocking people who live there from getting in and out of the neighborhood.

Dispatchers say the train ran off the tracks in the 1200 block of King Street around 5 a.m.

Investigators say they are working to set up a gravel road near the scene so people there are able to get around the accident.

They say the 64-car train is carrying flammable cargo, with two of the cars completely off the tracks. The cargo is contained at this time, but crews are worried if the cars teeter, they may be punctured.

Investigators say they believe the tracks may have started disintegrating, causing the train to slide off the tracks.

Police say they are waiting on crews out of South Carolina to respond to the scene with a crane to help clean up the crash, and open up the roadway.

NC becomes 1st state to drop federal jobless funds

Friday, June 28th, 2013

AP Business Writer

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina is cutting unemployment benefits for new claims beginning Sunday, a move that also makes it the first state disqualified from a federal unemployment compensation program for the long-term jobless.

State officials in February adopted a package of unemployment benefit cuts and increased costs on companies to repay $2.5 billion borrowed from Washington.

North Carolina needed the money after the Great Recession created a flood of jobless who needed benefits, draining the state’s unemployment fund.

But benefits cuts on those making unemployment claims on and after Sunday also disqualify North Carolina from receiving federal funds that kick in after state unemployment compensation runs out. The US Labor Department says about 170,000 workers whose six months of state benefits expire between July and January will lose more than $700 million.
