Foxx confirmed as next transportation secretary

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate has unanimously confirmed Anthony Foxx, the mayor of Charlotte and a political ally of President Barack Obama, as transportation secretary.

Foxx, 42, was approved Thursday by a 100-0 vote. He replaces outgoing secretary Ray LaHood, who campaigned against distracted driving and led the Obama administration’s efforts to boost the economy by improving the nation’s infrastructure and jump-starting high-speed trains.

As secretary, Foxx will oversee the agencies within the department that regulate the nation’s aviation, rail, transit and highway systems, as well as auto safety.

The mayor won national recognition when Charlotte hosted the Democratic National Convention last year. He calls Obama a friend and was a key surrogate in North Carolina for the president during his re-election bid last fall.

Thursday, June 27th, 2013

JACKSONVILLE, NC (WCTI) — A lawyer appeared in court Thursday morning on behalf of a Jacksonville mother, charged for the May drowning death of her toddler daughter. The suspect was already sentenced for the drowning of another child almost three years ago.

Amanda Gayle Reed's 20-month-old child, Mercadiez Kohlinda Reed, somehow fell into her family's above-ground pool on May 11, according to police. The incident happened on Forest Grove Avenue in Jacksonville.

Mercadiez was pronounced dead at Onslow Memorial Hospital, investigators said.

Reed, 27, was arrested on Wednesday and has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, negligent child abuse inflicting serious injury, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. She was released from jail on a $30,000 bond.
