NC businessman accused of arranging sex with child

Saturday, July 20th, 2013

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Detectives have arrested a Hope Mills businessman under a new state law and accused him of attempting to arrange to have sex with an autistic child.

The Cumberland County sheriff’s office said Friday that 47-year old William Jerry Faulkner Jr. is the first person in North Carolina charged under “Shaniya’s Law.” It addresses the unlawful sale, surrender or purchase of a minor. Faulkner is also charged with indecent liberties with a child.

A statement from the sheriff’s office said investigators found an illegal posting on Craigslist that sought a single mother with a special needs child to take the boy or girl to Faulkner in exchange for compensation. Investigators say Faulkner planned to have sex with the child.

Faulkner had been communicating with sheriff’s office detectives for the past several weeks.

Nice weather booms business

Saturday, July 20th, 2013

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Mother nature finally took a break from that wet and rainy weather this past month, and beach business couldn’t be better.

“Today, since I have gotten here at 11 o’clock, we have been really, really busy,” added another employee at Wings near Wrightsville Beach.

Busy is a good thing for beach businesses, especially after a very wet stretch of weather this past month. These shops say the more sunshine, the better the business.

“During the day people are trying to get off the beach as soon as they can if it is raining,” said ice cream stand worker Geena Davis. “They are running across the bridge and not here.”

“It depends on how hard it is raining,” said Henna tattoo artist Jahde Justad, “But yes. Usually the sunnier the better.”

Workers hope the trend in nice weather continues to draw people to the beaches and into their stores. They said they can handle a few storms, but want the flooding rains to stay away.
