Abandoned house fire backs up traffic near Southport

Friday, July 26th, 2013

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — In Southport, a fire at a building backed up traffic for a half a mile on Long Beach Road Thursday night.

Firefighters said the flames started at an abandoned house on a dirt road behind Surf Cinemas. They had to shut the road down and call in several fire departments because the only fire hydrant was across the street.

The home burned to the ground.

No word on whether anyone was hurt.

GOP-backed election changes head to NC House

Friday, July 26th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The Republican-backed measure making sweeping changes to how, when and where North Carolinians can vote is headed to the state House, where it is expected to pass.

The bill approved Thursday by the GOP-dominated Senate requires voters to present photo ID and shortens early voting by a week. The measure also ends same-day voter registration and eliminates a high school civics program that encourages students to register.

North Carolina’s presidential primary would be held earlier to closely follow South Carolina’s vote. The bill also weakens disclosure requirements for those underwriting campaign ads and allows political parties to rake in unlimited corporate donations.

Republicans claim the bill will prevent voter fraud and restore faith in elections. Non-partisan voting rights groups, Democrats and Libertarians say the true goal is suppressing voter turnout.

THIS JUST IN: Lawmakers adopt new North Carolina abortion rules

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — Republican lawmakers have decided to adopt new North Carolina abortion rules just before the end of the session. That’s according to our sister station WTVD in Raleigh.

The final vote was 32 to 13.

The bill gives the state Department of Health and Human Services the authority to regulate abortion clinics with the same standards as outpatient surgical centers “while not unduly restricting access.”

Lawmakers are expected to close their annual session early Friday.

Gov. Pat McCrory threatened to veto abortion regulations that didn’t leave the rules to the judgment of the state health agency. The Republican governor said that legislation crossed the line between protecting patient safety and restricting access to a legal medical procedure. McCrory said during his campaign that he would not sign any new abortion restrictions into law.

NARAL Pro-Choice North Carolina, Planned Parenthood and others said they delivered petitions Thursday containing the signatures of tens of thousands of residents who oppose the proposed new regulations.
