Opponents of election reform bill rally in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Several community groups joined forces in a rally for voting rights today in Wilmington.

They voiced their opposition of House Bill 589. The election reform legislation would enact voter ID in North Carolina and cut the early voting period from 17 days to 10 days.

Rally participants say if this bill is passed, it will be detrimental to the state’s voting process.

“The lines are going to be longer. The overworked Board of Elections staff are going to be further overwhelmed. You’re going to end up with greater chaos,” said Jana Albritton of the Lower Cape Fear League of Women Voters.

The Senate passed HB 589 yesterday by a 32-14 vote. A final vote is expected today.
