Thursday, July 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police say they are looking for the driver of a stolen car who crashed into another vehicle, injuring two others in Wilmington.

It happened in the 1800 block of Castle Street around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

Police say when they responded to the scene of the hit-and-run, two people were transported to the hospital for injuries.

The driver and passenger who were hurt told police that the driver of the Acura that hit them jumped out of the car and took off running after the crash.

The victims were not able to get a description of the suspect, but police say when they ran the tags on the abandoned Acura, the car showed up stolen from Leland.

No word on the victims’ injuries, but police are investigating.

NC ports being asked to give land for park

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (AP) — The board of directors of the North Carolina State Ports Authority is being asked to consider turning land originally purchased for a new port over to the state.

The board is scheduled to meet in Wilmington on Thursday and hear a presentation from representatives of an environmental group known as Save the Cape.

Earlier this month, the group released a prospectus on creating a park and a bird sanctuary on a 600-acre tract of land near Southport. The proposal suggests turning over the land to the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The land was purchased to create a container ship terminal seven years ago but has not been developed.
