Rep. Susi Hamilton speaks out about her decision to stay in the NC House

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

RALEIGH, N.C. (WWAY) — Rep. Susi Hamilton (D-18th District) says she is going to keep her seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Within the past 24 hours, issues arose about her becoming Carolina Beach Town Manager.

“This morning it was actually me who brought the statue to the attention of the legislative ethics attorney,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton is currently serving her second term in the General Assembly.

She says she asked the ethics attorney earlier this month if taking the job in Carolina Beach would be a conflict of interest and they told her it wouldn’t be.

“It’s a rather obscure law. It only applies to town managers who are managing a town of a certain size,” said Hamilton.

North Carolina General Statue 160A precludes town managers from holding elected office.

“Unfortunately I received bad information and it was incorrect and it cost us to make a decision that obviously it wasn’t possible for me to do,” said Hamilton.

Hamilton says both her and the Town of Carolina Beach acted on good faith and that she wouldn’t have moved forward without clearance from the ethics committee.

She says her main focus right now continues to be the citizen in her district.

“I have a responsibility to District 18 and I take my legislative role very seriously, so I chose to stay with the North Carolina State Legislator and represent the constituents of District 18,” said Hamilton.

Charlotte Douglas concourse fills with smoke

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – An electrical problem with a moving walkway sent smoke wafting through the international terminal at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, forcing officials to shut down a number of gates.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/14Jp42O) nearly half the gates in Concourse E were closed Wednesday. By the evening, the airport had bussed roughly 150 passengers from five aircraft to avoid the concourse and were being bused to unaffected gates.

Concourse E handles many of USAirways regional jets.

Firefighters received an emergency call just before 5 p.m. No one was reported injured and airport officials say the incident has been contained.

Earlier Wednesday, a swarm of bees at a tug delayed the departure of a US Airways Express flight at the gate. A beekeeper collected the bees and the flight resumed to Indianapolis.
