NC state elections chairman preaches respect

Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

Associated Press

CARY, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s new top election official wants county election board members to work as colleagues and not political rivals after recent dust-ups have led to allegations of partisanship and voter suppression.

State Board of Elections Chairman Josh Howard addressed several hundred county board members, elections directors and staff Wednesday at a training seminar in Cary. The state board and all 100 county boards have Republican majorities because GOP Gov. Pat McCrory was elected.

Democrats and civil rights groups say they’re outraged after actions by Republican elections board members in Pasquotank and Watauga counties last week could make it harder for college students to vote.

The state board is likely to hear appeals. Howard said later he does not want the state board imposing its will on local boards.
