Monday, August 19th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are still searching for a suspect following a shooting at a Wilmington apartment complex that sent one person to the hospital.

It all started Sunday night just before 9:30 p.m. at Pinewood Apartments off of Randall Parkway when dispatchers got reports of shots fired near the 400 block of Thrasher Court.

Police say they found a 40-year-old man laying on the ground with gunshot wounds to his arm, leg and hip.

Witnesses say the suspect took off running towards Pheasant Court, but police have not arrested anyone for the crime.

Former DA Gore strikes plea deal, avoids jail

Monday, August 19th, 2013

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Former District Attorney Rex Gore has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor willful neglect to discharge a duty of his office. In exchange, prosecutors have agreed to drop felony charges against him.

Gore will not lose his license to practice law and will receive a suspended sentence, his attorney said.

The charges stemmed from allegations Gore signed off on false expense reports for one of his former Assistant DAs Elaine Kelley. Kelley pleaded guilty earlier this year to misprision of a felony and agreed to pay back more than $14,000 in travel expenses she had received.

Gore had said he had agreed to pay Kelley for travel when he hired her to handle cases in Bladen County. He said he had no intent to overstep his authority.

Gore was District Attorney for Brunswick, Bladen and Columbus counties for 20 years before losing in the 2010 Democratic Primary to Butch Pope. Republican Jon David won the general election that year.

Gore’s case was handled by the Attorney General’s Office.
