WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wednesday the nation marked the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s, “I Have a Dream,” speech.

People from around our area found ways to honor King’s dream, including an event at Innes Park in downtown Wilmington.

As people across the country celebrated the day when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and recited those iconic words, “I Have a Dream.”

Wednesday students in the Port City joined the celebration.

“Most people think that it helped civil rights and helped pass that law, and I think it helped civil rights too, so yeah, said Luke Lamporte, St. Mark Catholic School 6th Grade Student.

Luke was just one of the many students in our area that played a part of making Dr. King’s, “I Have a Dream” speech real on Wednesday.

“A lot of people are thinking about their freedom today and I am also thinking about our freedom,” said Campbell Idol, St. Mark Catholic School 6th Grade Student.

The 6th grade students from St. Mark were not alone. Patrick Peoples is a senior at New Hanover High School and joined in on the 50th Anniversary celebration.

“To be able to have an integrated education at the most basic level is really a big deal for me,” said Peoples.

Several hundred people gathered at Innes Park and used this anniversary of King’s monumental speech to talk about how the general assembly influences our communities.

“This will be in our history text books and I hope that my children will be able to read it and laugh at how ridiculous some of these restrictive measures sound,” said Peoples.
