Beach Buggy taxi driver robbed at gunpoint, forced to drive around

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are searching for a couple of suspects they say pulled a gun on a taxi driver, and forced him to drive to different places in the area early Wednesday morning.

Wilmington police were notified of the crime around 6:30 a.m. They say it all started when a Beach Buggy Taxi driver picked up two men in his cab. After getting into the vehicle, police say the suspect in the front, passenger seat pulled a gun on the driver.

The suspect with the gun then demanded the cabby drive them to several locations in the area, finally ending up at the Roses on Carolina Beach Rd, according to police. That’s when they say the two men jumped out of the cab and took off.

No word on what the suspects got away with.

Soldier sentenced to death for Fort Hood shooting

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

Associated Press

FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A military jury has sentenced Maj. Nidal Hasan to death for killing 13 people during the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood.

Hasan never denied being the gunman and has said the attack on unarmed soldiers was motivated by a desire to protect Muslim insurgents fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Because he did not dispute the allegations, the trial has been primarily a pursuit of the death penalty.

The same jury that sentenced him to death Wednesday also found him guilty last week in the attack, which also wounded more than 30 people at the Texas military base.

Military prosecutors believed that any sentence short of death would deny.

Before an execution date is set, the sentence will face years, if not decades, of appeals.

ONLY ON 3 UPDATE: CFCC student hit by car taken to hospital

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A CFCC student making her way to class Wednesday morning was struck by a car when she was crossing a street less than a block away from the campus.

It happened around 9 a.m. when a student in her fifth semester at the school was walking on Front Street in Downtown Wilmington, and began walking across Walnut Street.

When WWAY got to the scene, the student who was hit, Petra Costa, was sitting near the intersection where she was struck talking to CFCC staff about her condition.

Costa says she thinks the man who struck her with his car was likely going faster than the 25 mph speed limit that is posted on a sign just a few feet from the intersection.

At the scene, Costa said the car hit her directly in the hip, sending her to the ground where she hit her head.

According to CFCC staff, Costa was taken to the hospital around 11 a.m. to be checked out. No word on what charges the driver may face.
