NC woman charged with DWI at fast-food drive-thru

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

SHELBY, N.C. (AP) – Shelby police have charged a woman with driving while impaired after finding her slumped over the wheel of a car stopped in the drive-through line at a fast-food restaurant.

The Shelby Star reports (http://bit.ly/17hOyDM) that police said officers responded to a call about a car sitting in the drive-through lane of a McDonald’s with the driver slumped over the steering wheel. It was the second such case in two weeks.

A police report said the car driven by 22-year-old Brianna Marie Edmondson was blocking the drive-through on Sunday. The lower of two breath samples taken registered a .20, which is more than twice the legal limit.

Edmondson is being held on a $2,500 secured bond at the Cleveland County jail. It’s not known if she has an attorney.

NC woman pleads guilty to stealing appliances

Tuesday, August 27th, 2013

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Federal authorities say a former Charlotte-area real estate agent has pleaded guilty on charges that she sold appliances stolen from vacant homes owned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The U.S. Attorney’s office said 49-year-old Sember Lynn Smathers pleaded guilty on Monday to conspiracy to steal government property.

According to documents, Smathers used a master key to enter the vacant HUD homes and removed appliances valued at $13,678 from the homes between September 2008 and July 2009.

In February 2009, prosecutors say Smathers and a co-conspirator set up a business in Shelby where they sold the appliances and other items stolen from the homes.

Smathers is free on bond pending her sentencing. She faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
