NC high school student shot; suspect captured

Friday, August 30th, 2013

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AP) — Police say a student at a Winston-Salem high school was shot and wounded, and that another student is in custody.

A statement from police said officers responded to a report of a shooting at around 2:30 p.m. Friday at Carver High School, which is on the city’s northeast side. Winston-Salem Police Chief Barry Rountree told a news conference that the school was conducting a fire drill at the time.

The report came more than an hour before classes would have been dismissed.

Police said the victim was taken to N.C. Baptist Hospital with what they described as non-life threatening injuries.

Neither the suspect nor the victim has been identified.

The high school, which has an enrollment of approximately 700 students, postponed its home football game.

Students celebrate parent involvement by tossing water balloons at school leaders

Friday, August 30th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The principal and the assistant principal at Wilmington’s Codington Elementary had a chance to cool off this afternoon, but probably not the way they wanted to.

As a reward for getting 100 percent PTA involvement in their class, some students got to lob a couple of water balloons at the administrators.

“We’ve been in school for over five weeks,” principal Eric Pfirman said. “We’re a year round school, so this was a nice break for about 15 minutes to go outside and have some fun on on a beautiful day.”

More than 140 students were able to throw balloons at the principal and assistant principal.

Shallotte bar vandalized with racial slurs, profanity

Friday, August 30th, 2013

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A Brunswick County business owner woke up to an unwanted sight this morning. Someone vandalized her bar with racial slurs.

The owner of Remedy’s Lounge off NC 130 in Shallotte says she had a problem with a customer three weeks ago. The customer was unhappy with the bar’s racially mixed crowd and confronted her about it. That’s who she thinks vandalized the building.

Along with the profanity, several windows were broken and wires in the back of the building were cut.

The owner, who did not want to go on camera, says she has been open for about four months and many people in the area are unhappy with the crowd that hangs out at remedy’s. But she says she is not going to discriminate against the clientele.

A customer says this is a sad day for Brunswick County.

“We are all supposed to be a community,” Tony Cicero said. “Let’s all live together. Let’s all work together. Let’s work things out together. Let’s not this one’s that, that one’s that. This is ridiculous. There is no room in this day and age for stuff like that.”

The owner estimates thousands of dollars in damage to the business.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating.

The owner says she is not going to let anyone intimidate her. Remedy’s will be open tonight.
