Raleigh cops stop charities from feeding homeless

Monday, August 26th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Raleigh police have stopped charities from feeding the homeless at a public square.

A police officer told Love Wins Ministries not to hand out breakfast biscuits Saturday morning. The group has been doing that for six years.

Ministry founder Hugh Hollowell says there is no provision in Raleigh for the homeless to get meals on the weekends.

Distributing food in parks without a permit violates a city ordinance.

Mayor Nancy McFarlane said Sunday a city council committee will address the situation this week. McFarlane says neither she nor the council were involved in the decision to stop the meals.

Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said Sunday that no arrests have been made of those feeding the homeless. He says those running the food programs were simply told about the city ordinance.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A motorcycle carrying at least one passenger on the back crashed into the woods just after crossing over the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Sunday night.

Dispatchers say around 5:30 p.m., several calls came in about a motorcycle that crashed on the Brunswick County side of the bridge after heading out of downtown Wilmington.

Wilmington police, New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies, and state troopers all responded to the scene, and then called for EMS.

Police say the driver may have been involved in a fight downtown before crashing his bike with one or two passengers on the back.

No word yet on injuries from the crash, or on charges that driver may face.
