CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Police say a man found dead at Carolina Beach killed himself.

Investigators are working to identify the man, who they say turtle patrol found dead in the surf on Carolina Beach early Friday morning.

Carolina Beach Police say the New Hanover County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted a preliminary autopsy and believes the cause of death is a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Around 6:30 a.m., police say they responded to a call about a man who was unresponsive on the beach near the 400 block of Carolina Beach Avenue.

A member of the Carolina Beach Sea Turtle Project found the body, described as a white male, about 35 years old.

Carolina Beach Police have requested a full autopsy in Jacksonville.

Investigators say they have not determined the man’s identity.
