NC governor signs regulatory overhaul bill

Friday, August 23rd, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Pat McCrory has signed into law a wide-ranging regulatory bill he says will cut burdensome rules for businesses and government red tape.

The anchor of the 59-page law signed Friday is a new process by which state officials review rules to carry out environmental, health and labor laws among others and repeal them if they are found unnecessary.

The bill also requires all hotels to install carbon monoxide detectors in each room, following three poisoning deaths in the same Boone motel room this year.

McCrory signed two executive orders to address concerns he had with the bills on clear-cutting around billboards and garbage trucks that could leak liquid waste.

McCrory has until Sunday night to act on bills on his desk or they’ll automatically become law.

Mail Room continues tradition of free copies for teachers

Friday, August 23rd, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With the school year about to start teachers need a lot of papers to be copied.

Budget cuts often limit the number of prints they can make at school. So the Mail Room in Long Leaf Mall is stepping up to the plate by helping teachers with free copies.

Today teachers could get 200 freebies to get their year started.

“It’s outstanding,” teacher Shenicka Williams said. “It’s a very big help. You’ll be amazed how many copies a teacher will go through in a year’s time. To have this support is amazing. It’s very generous of the Mail Room. We’re very grateful.”

Every Friday during the school year New Hanover County teachers can stop by and get 100 free copies.

The Mail Room is open until 6 p.m.
