Humorous speaking contest is no laughing matter

Saturday, September 21st, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The competition was cooking this weekend at Wilmington Toastmasters' Humorous Speaking and Evaluation contest, but Toastmasters say perfecting speaking skills is nothing to laugh about.

"A lack of effective communication is something that haunts us at all levels of society, all the way up to the President of the United States," said professor and toastmaster Bruce Ragon.

Toastmasters around the world are dedicated to helping people improve their public speaking and leadership skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Competitions like this one allow experts to evaluate a speaker’s strengths and weaknesses, giving them both constructive feedback and added confidence.

Speakers say people can then apply these skills to virtually any career.

"As an engineer, even if I invent something or create something but I can’t tell anyone about it, than it does no one any good," said toastmaster and engineer Libby Dunn.

Wilmington Toastmasters meet every Tuesday at Chris’s Restaurant starting at 7 A M. For more information or to find a club near you, check out their website.
