MONROE, N.C. (AP) – The Union County District Attorney’s office has dismissed cases involving 39 defendants because Monroe police failed to complete the paperwork necessary for prosecution.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/19hYxrF) District Attorney Trey Robison said most of the cases involved drugs or financial fraud. Robison said the dismissals did not result in any inmates being released from jail.

According to a city spokesman, Monroe City Manager John D’Agostino met with Robison on Tuesday and called the failure by police officers to complete the paperwork “inexcusable,”

D’Agostino said Thursday that Interim Police Chief Bryan Gilliard already has installed changes to monitor cases better and to change how data is entered and updated by computer.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The North Carolina father who was working in a two-story-deep dirt hole that collapsed and killed his daughter and her cousin is facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter says 31-year-old Jordan Arwood is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Carpenter says the charges were filed Thursday following a lengthy investigation.

Arwood was operating a backhoe in a pit in April when the walls caved in on the children. The bodies of 6-year-old Chloe Jade Arwood and 7-year-old James Levi Caldwell were dug out the next day.

While investigating, sheriff’s deputies removed guns and a marijuana plant from Arwood’s home.
