Shallotte couple charged with stealing tractor-trailer

Monday, September 30th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Shallotte couple is in jail charged with stealing a tractor-trailer earlier this month.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested James Clifford Long, 52, and Cassandra Lawing Long, 37, Saturday morning for larceny of a motor vehicle. Both Longs are charged with taking a 2000 Peterbilt truck with attached 2001 Mac trailer from Universal Transloaders. The truck and trailer are worth $53,000, investigators say.

Detectives say the truck was stolen early around 4 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. They say when the vehicle was taken, one of the wheels was locked causing a black tire mark on the highway starting on Malmo Loop Road at Universal Transloaders and continuing to St. James AME Zion Church at the intersection of NC 87 and US 17.

Investigators found the truck five days later at the SC Welcome Center at Little River, but the trailer was missing. Detectives say they found it at the Longs’ home.

James Long is in jail under $15,000 secured bond. Cassandra Long is under a $10,000 secured bond at the Brunswick County Detention Facility.
