BUILDING HISTORY: 411 Chestnut Street

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s not the biggest and not the fanciest building in Wilmington. But the building at 411 Chestnut Street has a history that started in 1844 and was instrumental in the cities religious development.

”It’s a great location and it’s one of the oldest houses standing downtown.” Owner Matt Scharf told us.

The house has a history that is linked to one of Wilmington’s most historic houses of worship.

”It was built in 1844, it was built as a tenement house. The very first tenant was the rabbi at the Temple Israel that is right around the corner.” Scharf said.

As with most old buildings, what looks good now, did not always.

”When we got it, it was in horrible condition. Floors were uneven, all the windows were broken out. So we started form the ground up and did about everything to the house.” Explained Scharf.

Matt got one lucky break, an outside treatment turned into a great preservative.

”The house has the original siding, someone had put aluminum siding on which protected the clapboards.” Scharf said.

While Matt’s company owns many buildings in Wilmington, he had some help with this one.

”411 Chestnut St is a property that we bought through Historic Wilmington about 5 years ago. The owner wanted to donate the building to Historic Wilmington Foundation so the building would be saved.” Scharf said.

The building has been through a lot in almost 170 years but it is back where it started, serving tenants.
