NC Spot Festival highlights local dish

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Folks from near and far made there way to Hampstead for the North Carolina Spot Festival this weekend, and they came with an appetite.

WWAY’s own Good Morning Carolina anchor Ashley Jacob’s hosted the event.

Vendors brought plenty of food and drink including Hamstead’s highlighted spot. Spot Festival Queen Samantha Romero and Princess Savannah Shirley say if you like seafood, the Spot Festival in Hampstead is the place to be.

“Spot is a small pan fish,” said Romero.

“They are caught best at the end of the pier right after daybreak or after a bad storm,” added Shirley. “They are really tasty and taste best fried up by our spot festival firemen.”

Romero and Shirley will continue to raise money for the festival and the Hampstead area year-round. They say there is no better way to represent their community.

UPDATE: Office fire may be total loss; Building valued at $1.6 million

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Crews have an office fire under control at 6329 Oleander Drive. And, all eastbound lanes, and one westbound lane are open. That’s according to Sammy Flowers, the Wilmington Fire Department Battalion Chief, and the Wilmington Police Department.

An off-duty Wilmington Fire captain was driving home from work and saw smoke coming through the ridge vent of the roof and called 911, the fire department says.

Oleander Drive between Bradley Creek Bridge to Greenville Loop Road is closed. Drivers are urged to stay away from the area and not to drive over water hoses.

The firefighter who saw and reported the fire went into the building to make sure everyone inside made it out safely. No one was hurt.

According to the building owner, the value of the structure was $1.6 million. The fire department says the structure sustained heavy fire and water damage and may be a total loss. The fire appeared to have started on the second floor attic area, but the cause is still undetermined.
