Alcoa launches fight-back for dam property rights

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Alcoa Inc. is pushing back against claims by North Carolina officials in a yearslong fight over control of the water and electricity coming from the state’s second-largest river system.

Alcoa said in court filings Wednesday it should be given the water quality certification it needs for a new federal operating license for the next 50 years.

State officials said in an August lawsuit that Alcoa has no ownership rights to the bed of the Yadkin River over which the company built four dams years ago. The federal lawsuit seeks a ruling that North Carolina has owned the river bottom since becoming a state after the American Revolution and now claims a stake in Alcoa’s four hydropower dams.

The state environment agency cited the lawsuit in rejecting the water quality certification.

WENTWORTH, N.C. (AP) – A Monroe man is being held under $1 million bond after the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office said he threatened to kill a judge.

The sheriff’s office said 39-year-old Jihad Abou Haidar was in court Wednesday to answer a charge of making threatening and harassing telephone calls.

Deputy Kevin Suthard said Haidar bought a gun from Remington Arms in Mayodan and claimed there was a problem with it. The manufacturer examined the gun and found no problems. Suthard said Haidar then made the threatening calls.

During the hearing in Rockingham County, Haidar argued with the judge and was also found in contempt of court. Suthard said it was when he was taken to the jail that Haidar threatened the judge.

Haidar is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 23rd.
