BUILDING HISTORY: Cumming Duls House

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The weeks building history features a beautiful historic home that has been part of downtown for over 150 years.

”This is the Cumming Duls house, the plaque in front says it was built in 1871 and that is partially true,” Owner Gabrielle Barone explains. “The house actually dates to 1861, the original portion of the house.”

As with many old Wilmington homes this one fell victim to fire in the early 1860’s and was rebuilt. For the Barone’s it took a little while before the house was their home.

“It was interesting, I had seen the house when we moved down here and it was very expensive and in very bad shape.” Gabrielle said.

A little patience paid off, the price came down and Gabrielle and Steve Barone got the house they wanted.

“As far as original, all the windows are original, the doors are original, and the floors are original. Just about everything that is structural is original to the house. Including the door to the powder room has a rose glass transom window over it.” Gabrielle told us.

Original items will only get you so far in a historic home and the Barone’s had plenty of work to do.

”As far as what we have done to the house the kitchen is a complete redo, we redesigned it, took down a wall. We now have a breakfast room with a fireplace and a really nice modern kitchen.” Gabrielle demonstrated.

The house is a great home for residents, present and past. Gabrielle says there have been several unexplained incidents.

”I had one incident where I could not get the door to open, and I said Jacob enough, I’ve had enough of this open the door. The door then opened.”

The name Jacob of course for Jacob Duls the second owner of the house. Some say you can see his image in this picture.

Onslow County woman arrested for North Topsail Murder

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013

SNEADS FERRY, NC (WWAY) — Two months ago exactly, authorities found two men, Robert Clinton Shellhammer IV and Christopher William Stewart, stabbed to death on North Topsail Beach.

Now, a day after a woman was arrested for murdering one of them, she made her first court appearance.

19-year-old Bekka Shellhammer was arrested yesterday afternoon at her home in Sneads Ferry.

She has been charged with the murder of Christopher Stewart.

The victim’s family cried as Shellhammer entered the court room two months after her husband and Christopher Stewart were murdered at North Topsail Beach.

Back in July, Willa-Jo Green and her friend were taking a stroll on the beach when a woman came up to her crying for help.

“She’s just walking up to us and she says ‘Can you help me? Please help me. He’s dead!'” Green said. “We were just stunned from the moment she said he was dead. We were like, ‘Who’s dead?’ And she said, ‘My husband. He’s been stabbed, and he’s dead.’”

When Green asked what happened, she says the woman just kept saying “I don’t know.”

Now, two months later, Shellhammer is charged with the murder of Christopher Stewart.

“We just want justice for our child.”

Family members of Stewart say it has been a rough couple of months, but they are hoping with Shellhammer’s arrest, they will finally see some justice in the murder of their son.

“We just have learned to deal with it every second of the day that he’s not coming home but we are glad once again to know that somebody has been arrested, and we can just keep praying that justice will be served,” Stewart’s mother, Shari White said.

White and her husband say the meeting between the three at north topsail beach was not random.

But they say there are still many unanswered questions as to why this happened.

White says although they are happy Shellhammer is behind bars, the arrest cannot bring their son home.

“No, it does not bring closure by any means.” White said. “We’ve lost our son.”

Shellhammer is being held on a $1 million bond at the Onslow County Jail.

We tried reaching out to the Onslow County Jail for a jailhouse interview with Shellhammer, but we never heard back.
