City holds meeting planning for future growth

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The city of Wilmington held a meeting to provide information and seek input on developing a long range plan for the city’s growth and development.

Questions like where will we live and how to best manage things like education over the next 25 years.

Planners project a population increase of about 50 percent with limited room to grow.

“The biggest take away is that we are running out land for development,” said City Urban Designer Allen Davis. “We have to think more creatively about retro fitting our corridors and doing some infill development, because 3700 acres of land is not that much left.”

This was one input meeting, there will be more. You can learn more about the long term plan, and offer your input at createwilmington.com.

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) – Indictments handed up against a man who shot four people near a Greenville Wal-Mart in June say he picked out his victims because they were white.

A grand jury indicted 23-year-old Lakim Faust on 14 charges Monday, including four counts of attempted first-degree murder.

The indictments say Faust, who is black, picked out his victims based on their race. The documents didn’t specify why Faust wanted to shoot white people, and police have not talked about why he picked out his targets.

Authorities say Faust had a plan for the attack and wanted to shoot a large number of people on June 21. Investigators say he had more than 100 rounds of ammunition when he started shooting at people at a law firm and a shopping center.

High Point mayor says there’s no reason to quit

Wednesday, September 25th, 2013

HIGH POINT, N.C. (AP) – The mayor of High Point says there is no reason for her to step down.

The High Point Enterprise reported (http://bit.ly/16FjZ7O) that Mayor Bernita Sims responded Monday to critics who have said she should resign because of questions about her personal finances.

Four city council members have said an investigation into Sims’ handling of a family member’s estate, as well as unpaid state income taxes and an unpaid city utility bill have undermined public confidence in the city.

Sims said the issues raised are personal matters that have nothing to do with her job.

The council members say Sims has not done enough to explain the issues.

Sims says the negative attention her financial problems have brought has been the result of media coverage.
