Surf City motel close to reopening building destroyed by fire

Monday, October 21st, 2013

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Part of a historic motel in Surf City is being rebuilt after a fire earlier this year.

Tiffany’s motel was a landmark in the town from the 1950s, but in January a fire claimed one of its buildings. Now the rebuilding processes is nearing its end.

It was a little after 3 a.m. on Jan. 31 when motel manager Regina Carter got the call that Tiffany’s was on fire.

“When I came up here, the whole building was on fire,” she said. “It was the first windy day we had had in forever so, it took our whole building down.”

She says the blaze claimed an entire building costing them money and business.

Carter says it’s been a rough road, but with construction almost finished, she says she’s finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

“It was devastating, because this was a historical landmark on the island, but, you know, we’re rebuilding everything,” Carter said.

And she says the new building will be even better than before.

“It’s going to be bigger, new and better,” Carter said. “This will be our single side, which will consist of a king bed and a kitchen, little small kitchen, and then across the road is our larger rooms.”

Carter says the old, single-story building will now be two stories high providing some great views of the beach. She says they’ve also added an elevator and are working on restoring the pool.

But carter is not bitter about the whole ordeal.

“Sometimes they say things happen for a reason, so therefore we’re getting this beautiful motel,” she said. “We have the same across the roads so I think therefore everything will be great.”

Since the fire Carter says they have received an outpouring support via e-mails and calls.

She says they hope to have the new building done by Thanksgiving.

Obama addresses widespread health care problems

Monday, October 21st, 2013

JULIE PACE
AP White House Correspondent

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is acknowledging his health care law’s rollout “hasn’t worked as smoothly as it’s supposed to work.”

Obama is encouraging Americans who want to sign up for insurance under new government exchanges to keep trying. He spoke from the White House’s Rose Garden.

The remarks came at Obama’s first health care event since widespread problems with sign-ups online became apparent.

He blamed problems in part to an overwhelming response. He says the program doesn’t depend on website and there are other ways to sign up.
