MARKING HISTORY: Haunted Cotton Exchange

Tuesday, October 29th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you like shopping, you know the Cotton Exchange downtown. It's a popular spot for those seeking a particularly gift, or a bite to eat. But, it may also be a favorite for those beyond the grave.

Lori Erwin started up the Haunted Cotton Exchange walking tour several years ago. She says the sights her visitors see are often unexplained, "They hear sounds, they see shadows."

"We saw a man at Doggy By Nature," Erwin recalls. "Maybe a minute later he disappeared. Nowhere to be found."

There are other ghosts that play tricks on shopkeepers. Some open drawers overnight, and others haught the restaurants with a ghost frequently sighted at Paddy's Hollow and the German Cafe.

Ghost enthusiasts think the history brings out the spirits in the eight-building complex that dates back to Wilmington's young days.

"The energy is incredible here, just as it was way back in the 1800's," says Erwin. "You had the railroad one block away, the river activity, just bustling with excitement. I think the lives of people back then have stayed."

Whatever you believe it up t you. Is it just a series of coincidences, or a haunted hotspot right in our backyard.

Stop by at night and see what you see; if you dare.
