Final Energy Star tax-free holiday this weekend

Thursday, October 31st, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Appliance retailers are hoping to cash in on North Carolina’s last tax-exempt weekend for qualified Energy Star appliances.

Retailers say since this program was introduced five years ago, this has become one of their busiest weekends.

Energy Star-labeled appliances, including washers, freezers, refrigerators, central air conditioners and ceiling fans, are exempt from sales tax this weekend. Energy Star appliances often cost more, but are more energy-efficient.

“You use your refrigerator all the time,” Kristi Johnson of Island Appliances in New Hanover County said.. “It runs constantly, so when you’re not at home, you’re going to be saving money regardless if you’re opening and closing that door all the time. You’re going to be saving money.”

Employees at Island Appliances on Carolina Beach Rd. say they are disappointed this is the state’s last-tax free weekend for the appliances.

Appliances must be bought for immediate delivery. Business purchases are not eligible for the tax break.

In August, the state held its final back-to-school tax-exempt weekend. Both programs are ending as a result of tax changes passed by the General Assembly this year.
