Firefighters quickly control fire at S. College Rd. Harris Teeter

Friday, October 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Fire Department says crews quickly controlled a fire this afternoon at the Harris Teeter at 820 S. College Rd.

A spokesman says the fire activated the sprinkler system in the store, which helped keep the flames in check.

Firefighters are performing salvage and overhaul operations now.

Investigators are one scene to determine how the fire started. A store employee tells WWAY the fire started on the roof, where workers were welding. The employee said it damaged the wine section inside the store.

The store has been under renovations for months, but has been open during the work.

WPD, NHSO to launch joint effort tonight

Friday, October 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Nearly two weeks after announcing a joint effort to crack down on crime Wilmington Police officers and New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies will hit the streets together tonight.

Police Chief Ralph Evangelous and Sheriff Ed McMahon announced Oct. 14 the partnership that adds 32 officers from each department on patrol.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer says the program is called Maximum Uniform Deployment, or MUD. The purpose of this initiative is to reduce crime and the fear of crime in communities that have seen spikes in violent crime involving gangs, according to WPD spokeswoman Linda Rawley.

Rawley says officers from both agencies will be paired in teams of two and work randomly throughout the city for the next few months.

Evangelous and McMahon outlined the plan in the wake of the shooting of NHSO Det. Michael Spencer in Creekwood. That shooting capped months of violence, including several shooting and multiple murders, centered around gangs in Wilmington. Evangelous admitted the arrest of two known gang leaders has created a leadership vacuum that has helped lead to some of the violence.
