Police search for masked men who rang doorbell, robbed homeowners

Friday, October 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are searching for 3 masked men who they say rang the doorbell at a Wilmington home before robbing the homeowners with a large gun.

The home invasion happened around 11 p.m. last night in the 3400 block of Regency Drive. Police say when the men, wearing toboggans and hoodies, walked up to the door, one of the homeowners answered.

That’s when they say the 3 men forced their way inside, where two people were home, and demanded money. Police say the homeowner handed over his wallet before the trio took off running.

SABLE and K-9 units helped in the search, but police believe the men may have hopped into a vehicle to get away. No one was hurt in the home invasion, but police continue investigating.

STORMTRACK 3: First freeze of the season tonight for some

Friday, October 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Many in Southeastern North Carolina will see their first freeze of the season tonight. Temperatures will quickly plummet into the 30's, making for the coldest night since early April.

The National Weather Service has issued the following products:

  • Frost Advisory for New Hanover & Brunswick Counties, except for the immediate coast. This means temperatures will fall into the mid 30's overnight, and a plant damaging frost is possible. The most rural, outlying areas have the best chance at seeing frost.
  • Freeze Watch for Bladen, Columbis & Pender County west of Hwy. 17. Temperatures will fall into the low 30's and may even dip just below freezing in these areas. A plant damaging freeze is likely

If you're looking to protect sensitive plants there are some steps you can take.

  • Water them during the warmest part of the day. This will slow the plant from cooling down overnight.
  • Mulch the base of the plant heavily just before watering. This adds extra insolation.
  • Cover the plants with fabric, not plastic. Covering the plants around sunset keeps the most heat inside. Always remember to uncover your plants first thing the next morning.
  • Of course, potted plants can easily be brought inside.

Things will start to warm by the end of the weekend, with highs in the 70's likely for Halloween.
