New SC-NC boundary could move retailer

Friday, November 29th, 2013

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — A Gastonia businessman is worried that his store in South Carolina will soon be a store in North Carolina.

The Charlotte Observer reported that 50-year-olf Victor Boulware’s Lake Wylie Mini Mart gets lots of customers from North Carolina, looking to take advantage of cheaper gasoline, fireworks and beer in his York County location.

The North Carolina-South Carolina Joint Boundary Commission is working to correct mistakes in the state line that was laid out by a series of surveys between 1735 and 1815.

The proposed adjustments could move Boulware’s store on state Highway 274 from York County, SC, to Gaston County.

That would make gasoline more expensive and end alcohol and fireworks sales, which are illegal in Gaston County.

Boulware says that would likely put him out of business.

NC labor activists protest low wages at Walmart

Friday, November 29th, 2013

CLAYTON, NC (AP) — North Carolina labor activists say they’re protesting the social cost of Walmart’s low prices.

Protests aimed at getting the retailing giant to pay more are planned Friday at Walmart stores in Raleigh and nearby Clayton as holiday shoppers crowd in looking for bargains. Activists say most Walmart workers earn less than $25,000 a year.

The National Labor Relations Board said this week a preliminary investigation backed complaints that the retailer unlawfully threatened California and Texas employees if they engaged in strikes and protests ahead of Black Friday last year.

The NLRB believes Walmart also illegally threatened, disciplined or terminated more than 100 employees in 13 states for participating in protests over wages and working conditions.

Walmart says it disagreed with the labor board and planned to defend itself.
