WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s Black Friday and retailers are pulling out all the stops to get shoppers in the stores and a jump start on holiday shopping.
Shoppers say the Independence Mall has all the must have stores and name brands.
“You have to go to Charlotte Russe, Forever 21, and Journeys,” said Zonia Martinez.
On the busiest day of the year Independence Mall was ready for bargain hunters.
“Three of our department stores Belk, Sears, and JCPenney opened at 8:00 PM,” said Helen Lewis, general manager of the Independence Mall. “We opened the mall doors at midnight. Most of the stores are open now and doors will open at about 8:00 AM this morning. We had a strategy as we went into it so I think it has gone rather well.”
Strategy is something that Lewis says you’re going to need if you plan on hitting the ground running on Black Friday.
“You’ve got to plan ahead,” said Lewis. “You’ve got to clip your coupons and you’ve got to have you a plan and a strategy of where you’re going to go and when and know what you want to buy. You’ve got to get all of those things first then shop around and get your specials and then get the other things that are ongoing.”
Shoppers say in the spacious Independence Mall there is a bargain around every corner, and you don’t have to fight the crowd.
“All three of the department stores all had door busters,” said Lewis. “They had incentives and they had gift cards. Belk’s gave away a 1000 dollar shopping spree so yes there were a number of things going on from the very beginning.”
“There wasn’t as many people as I thought there would be, but if you were to go to Raleigh people would probably fight over things,” said Martinez.
