Woman faces charges in morning crash that killed Supply man

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

HOLDEN BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Investigators say a wet road contributed to a traffic crash that killed a Brunswick County man this morning. Now the woman in the other car involved faces charges.

Highway Patrol says Mark Teague, 25, of Supply died in the crash. Troopers says Teague and his wife were traveling on Holden Beach Road (NC 130) near Holden Beach before 10 a.m. They say a car driven by Rhonda Varnam, 52, of Supply hydroplaned, crossed the center line and hit the Teagues’ car.

Highway Patrol says Varnam will be charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Investigators say Varnam and Teague’s wife were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. There’s no word yet on their conditions.

A witness working at a business near where the crash happened says she believes the two cars hit head-on. She says the Teagues’ car flipped into a ditch on the side of the road.

NC troopers to patrol I-40 during holiday

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Motorists using Interstate 40 will see a significant presence from the NC Highway Patrol during the Thanksgiving holiday.

The patrol is joining its counterparts across the nation in a campaign focused solely on I-40. The operation begins Wednesday and resumes on Sunday. According to research, the most heavily traveled times are from noon until midnight Wednesday and again from morning until late Sunday,

Officials hope the constant visibility from state to state will create a safe driving environment for all motorists, save lives and prevent injuries.

Last year during the Thanksgiving holiday, the patrol investigated 11 fatal accidents, 432 injury collisions and 1,457 property damage collisions. Troopers attribute many of the collisions to excessive speed.
