Happy Thanksgivukkah: Rare calendar quirk causes holiday overlap

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Happy Thanksgivukkah! A rare calendar quirk causes an overlap that hasn’t happened since 1888, and won’t happen again for another 70,000 years.

While Hanukkah usually comes well into December, this year marks a historic holiday convergence of both the Jewish and Thanksgiving celebrations. Since many may be wondering what makes Hanukkah fall so early this year, and what the late holiday means for next year’s, we turned to a Rabbi right here in the Cape Fear.

Rabbi Robert Waxman is a religious leader at the B’Nai Israel Synagogue in Wilmington, and he stopped by Good Morning Carolina today to fill us in on all there is to know about Hanukkah and the reason behind the calendar overlap.

Watch the full interview with anchor Ashley Jacobs to find out more, and where you can celebrate in our area.
