Forget Black Friday, as Brown Thursday nears

Monday, November 25th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The early bird gets the worm, but perhaps misses the whole turkey.

Some stores are opening their doors before the table is even set this Thanksgiving. The earlier stores are opening, the more people are asking when is enough, enough.

“I think the stores are just being incredibly greedy,” Nora Pepper of Wilmington said. “They are just worried about the money, money, money.”

And she’s not the only one.

According to our Facebook page, Wilmington has a lot to say about the big box stores opening the doors as early as 6 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.

Kmart will open its doors at 6 a.m. Tthanksgiving Day and Walmart’s deals start at 6 p.m.

But even with competitive hours, local businesses are not too worried.

“It could be even busier because of the fact that there is a shorter window of opportunity to shop,” said Ed Hobson, owner of Learning Express.

Thanksgiving arrived about a week later this year than last year. Local businesses say that could mean more sales, especially if customers “can shop at their convenience and still get great deals,” Hobson said.

While big box stores hope to cash in on Brown Thursday and Black Friday, mom and pops hope you save some cash for the weekend and Small Business Saturday.
