Woman charged after boy found handcuffed is fired

Saturday, November 23rd, 2013

MONROE, N.C. (AP) – Union County social services officials have fired the woman accused after an 11-year-old boy was found by a sheriff’s deputy handcuffed to his front porch with a dead chicken tied to his neck.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/1h806jh) the county fired Wanda Sue Larson on Friday, accusing her of what it called “unacceptable personal conduct and grossly inefficient job performance.”

Larson and Dorian Lee Harper were arrested last Friday after the deputy found the boy. The couple had adopted four kids and were foster parents to the boy.

Investigators in Union County interviewed the boy as well as the four other children removed from the home. Sheriff Eddie Cathey wouldn’t reveal what the children said.

The children are now in the custody of the Davidson County Division of Social Services.

Congressmen hear from NC opponents of health law

Saturday, November 23rd, 2013

GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) – Opponents of the federal health care overhaul testified before congressional Republicans at a North Carolina hearing that the law’s supporters called a political stunt.

About 200 people attended a Gastonia hearing Friday by a U.S. House Committee headed by Obama administration critic U.S. Rep Darrell Issa of California.

Three House Republicans heard from five people chosen beforehand who read their pre-submitted statement.

Sherry Overbey of Belmont says her new health premiums will skyrocket from $396 to $713 monthly in 2014, with higher deductibles. She is among the millions nationwide whose policy was canceled because the law considers it substandard.

About three dozen protesters gathered outside the Gaston County Courthouse.

Gerrick Brenner of Progress North Carolina Action says the law’s glitches need to be fixed, but the hearing was a sham.
