NC Christmas Festival wraps up with parade

Saturday, December 14th, 2013

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Folks decorated more than the tree for the holidays this weekend. Cars, bikes, and even people dressed up with ornaments and tinsel for the North Carolina Christmas parade in Leland.

Everyone from the Mayor of Leland to the Matthew’s Quintuplets to our own members of the WWAY News team Makenzi Henderson and Daniel Seamons were there.

Kids enjoyed watching the parade and collecting candy, while parents like that it’s another way to celebrate and get to know the community they live in.

“It’s great to give the public the chance to put things in the parade and go out and watch the parade, and see your local fire department,” said spectator Tim Arneson. “You need to have events to celebrate, like this one here and there is a Christmas parade. They even have a Saint Patty’s day parade in town.”

The parade was scheduled to carry on rain or shine. Luckily, the rain held off and spectators lined the street instead of staying in their cars.

Tornado Watch in effect until 2 AM

Saturday, December 14th, 2013

SOUTHEASTERN, NC (WWAY) — A Tornado Watch has been issued for the entire viewing area until 2 AM. This includes New Hanover, Brunswick, Bladen, Pender, Robeson, Columbus, Duplin, Onslow, and Sampson Counties.

A warm front associated with an area of low pressure to the west is lifting over the region Saturday evening. With warm, moist air available and lots of energy to work with, strong thunderstorms and isolated tornadoes could develop.

The main threat with this event will be gusty, damaging winds in any strong storms that may develop. The system passes through in the way of a cold front by late Saturday evening/early Sunday morning, followed by cooler and drier conditions.
