Ex-Rep. Etheridge to lead NC federal farm office

Monday, December 30th, 2013

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Former congressman and state schools superintendent Bob Etheridge is the new executive director of the North Carolina office of the federal agency that oversees some agricultural programs and keeps farmers abreast of other initiatives.

The US Department of Agriculture announced Etheridge’s new job, which he began Monday. The Harnett County Democrat served as superintendent for eight years and the 2nd District congressman for 14 years through 2010. He also ran unsuccessfully for his party’s nomination for governor in 2012. Etheridge also served as an Election Night analyst for WWAY in Nov. 2012.

Etheridge’s career also has included time as a tobacco farmer. He succeeds Aaron Martin as state director. There’s been an interim director for about a year.

The Farm Service Agency carries out federal conservation programs and resolves appeals over federal issues with local farmers.

Deputies trying to find out if credit cards found in woman’s purse were stolen

Monday, December 30th, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies say they’re having trouble getting information about whether credit cards they found during an investigation are stolen.

Investigators say it started as a call about two suspicious women possibly using stolen credit cards to buy gift cards at the Food Lion in Carolina Beach. Police there put out a description of a van with New York plates. Deputies on patrol spotted the van and pulled it over on Carolina Beach Road.

The driver, Yohan Bradshaw, gave consent to search the vehicle. That’s when deputies say inside Lakeisha Fulcher’s purse they found several credit cards not in her name. They also found multiple gift cards in the purses of Lakeisha and Natasha Fulcher.

Deputies charged Natasha Fulcher with resist, delay, obstruct and fraudulent identification after they say she showed them a fake ID.

Detectives say they contacted Capital One to find out if the credit cards are stolen, but they could not reach anyone who would provide the information. They are still trying to reach someone who will tell them if the cards are stolen, which means there could be more charges in the case. In the meantime, they seized and photographed the credit cards, ID and gift cards.
