Pleasure Island set to drop beach ball as New Year arrives

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — In Carolina Beach, the Island of Lights Committee is preparing for one their biggest nights of the year this New Year’s Eve.

Starting at 9 p.m. at the gazebo between the Boardwalk and the Marriott is a street dance with a band and DJ. You can dance your way through midnight when the fire department will drop the lighted beach ball followed by a 15-minute fireworks show.

With close to 2,000 people expected to attend the New Year’s Eve party, we asked Island of Lights Committee President Frances Massey for tips to be part of the crowd.

“Come early if you can,” she said. “Parking in the city parking lots at this time of the year is free, so park there. Come out and have a good time, because it’s for people of all ages.”

The Island of Lights Committee will be selling hot chocolate, hats and noise makers.

Many of the Carolina Beach bar and restaurants are also having new year’s eve specials.

Another tip if you plan on coming out tonight, bring a jacket because with the breeze it is chilly on Pleasure Island.

Vitamin E may slow Alzheimer’s disease progression

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

Researchers say that vitamin E might help slow the progression of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease.

In a study of more than 600 older veterans, high doses of the vitamin delayed the decline in daily living skills, such as making meals, getting dressed and holding a conversation, by about six months over a two-year period.

It’s the first time any treatment has been shown to alter the course of dementia at that stage. Current Alzheimer’s medicines just temporarily ease symptoms.

Doctors say people should not rush to take vitamin E without discussing its possible risks with a doctor.

The Department of Veterans Affairs sponsored the study. Results were published Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Children’s Museum gets party started early with New Year’s Noon

Tuesday, December 31st, 2013

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Children’s Museum of Wilmington made sure kids do not have to worry about missing the New Year’s fun because of a bedtime.

Even though 2014 is just hours away, some children rang in the New Year a little early.

Seven-year-old Nicholas McNaughton says he could not wait to celebrate during the museum’s New Year’s Noon event.

“I’m so excited for that, “he said, “because I get to throw confetti and stuff.”

He says making projects at each station is also part of his new year game plan. But he says his favorite part of the new year is what comes afterward.

“Because I’m turning eight in a couple months after it,” Nicholas said.

Kids say there favorite part was throwing confetti at the strike of noon. Children also enjoyed making special crowns, yummy treats and of course playing throughout the museum. But if you missed out on the New Year’s Eve fun, don’t worry. There will be another New Year’s Noon celebration tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
