Leland police officer hospitalized after woman rams patrol cars, leads police on chase

Friday, December 27th, 2013

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — A Leland Police Officer was hospitalized Thursday night after a woman slammed into his patrol car.

According to Leland Police Chief Mike James, the loss prevention team at the Walmart on New Pointe Blvd. had been tipped off by the Walmart in Wilmington to watch out for a woman they suspected of shoplifting.

Around 10 p.m. Chief James says the store contacted police when this same woman entered their store.

Sgt. Keel approached 51-year-old Joyce Mae Norris as she was getting in her Dodge truck and tried to talk with her according to Chief James.

That’s when police say Norris hit Keel’s patrol car, and another car in the parking lot, before speeding off.

Other officers arrived on the scene and chased the woman toward the Waterford neighborhood.

Chief James says Cpl. Long also tried to stop Norris, almost resulting in a head on collision.

Norris was finally arrested after Chief James says the road ran out on her near the Good Will.

Norris is charged with larceny, flee to elude, assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, DWI, and hit and run according to the Leland Police Department’s Facebook page.

Cpl. Long was sent to the hospital for problems with his wrist and knee, but he is expected to be fine according to Chief James.

Police say there was a lot of damage to the patrol cars, but at this time they do not know how much it will cost to have them fixed.
